First of all happy halloween everyone! I actually started writing this post yesterday and finished it now. I wish I had something halloweeny to post today but I really dont. I thought about posting about horror films I liked over the years, until I realized I barely ever watch any and most of the ones I've seen are asian. So not very halloweeny then.

So because I am in the midst of yet another celebreity fixation/crush etc, this time I am actually going to post about it. My last one, for anyone who is curious, was the lovely John Simm (who I am still fond of, of course just in a less...obssesive manner) and this time it is Tim Roth.
I know you must be asking yourself now "Is she going to devote a whole post to Tim Roth?" and Yes, yes I am." and if you are thinking "But why?" I have only one response for you. "Why not?"

So my first run in with Roth was in the classic film Pulp Fiction. In comemoration of that, a clip:

I love how Roth pretty much speaks the same way in Lie to Me. With that slight (and sometimes not so slight) cockney. It's funny but it was also weird as hell to hear him without it in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead. Speaking of which!

I saw the film last night. It was alot of fun, plenty of silly wordplay but I think Gary Oldman just about stole the show from Tim on a few occasions. He was really good and funny, Tim got to be the smart one in that pair while poor ol Roscencrantz (Oldman) was often two steps behind, not that it stopped him from making of a bunch of scientific discoveries (though without actually realizing their significance at all. lol) Both men spent the majority of the film disoriented and more than a little confused. It was fun watching Roth and Oldman mess around for pretty much most of the movie. Just to give an idea of the tone, here is a couple of short clips:

I personally loved how Rosencrantz would fuck around and do dumb things and Guildenstern (Roth) would glare at him or scold him most of the time but other times just play along. It was also funny how Guildenstern kept having these existential and philosphical thoughts and theories, often hilariously convoluted. Oldman and Roth played really well off each other. I was sad when the movie ended as it meant no more tomfoolery from those two. Speaking of the end The end is kind of sad when they finally realize they are, as the title would imply, dead. Which is just my interpretation of it, and I know nothing about the play beyond what I saw in the film so I dunno how common an interpretation it is or if that's what Tom Stoppard intended but it reads to me like the events of R&G are dead take place after their death and the film is basically them reliving their final days, walking around some kind of spirtual limbo, not really sure where they are or why and the Player (dreyfuss's character) is like a kooky spirtual guide. It would explain alot of the film that didnt quite make sense otherwise. Guildenstern's last words when he finally understands what happpened and where he is, is kind of sad. Sort of like reallizing that they just coasted through life and did as they were told and never gave it all much thought and now they are dead. I guess the player said it best though "well next time you'll do better". In more shallow observations I was surprised by how thick Roth's hair used to look. Man 19 years will really do a number on your hairline.

This morning I saw another old film starring the Roth. It is called Captives. The story is about a female dentist, who is working in a british prison (WHY is she working there you ask? I have no idea. Girlfriend is crazy obv) and Roth is an inmate and thusly one of her patients and...well I think you can see where this is going. But just in case you cant I'll spell it out. THEY FALL IN LUURRRRVE. But the movie is thankfully not even remotely sappy but instead dark, intense, dirty and a little bit violent. Just how I like all my love stories! Anyway I wont put any clips but rather here is a link to the whole film on YT: http://www.youtube.com/user/HarveyProductions#g/u

On an objective level the film is deeply mediocre, I mean I enjoyed it because it had Tim Roth lol. In fact if anyone wants a non fangirl serious review of the film you can find one here: http://www.prisonflicks.com/reviews.php?filmID=49 I stumbled on to it by accident. But it sums up the film very well. I think for all it's faults it's worth it to watch Tim talking with that cockney of his and using those menacing stares he pretty much uses in every thing he's been in even when he's not supposed to be menacing, seriously I dont even think he was trying to be menacing half the time he was staring at the heroine in this film but it just LOOKS menacing anyway! I figure half the time he was supposed to be staring at the heroine with affection or wariness but he just looks like he wants to eat her. and not in the good way, but in the hannibal lector way.

Photobucket a random cap.

Oh! Funny bit of trivia. Anthony Hopkins was kind of not sure he wanted to play Hannibal, so the movie execs were considering Tim Roth instead! So if Hopkins had turned it down, Roth would have likely been Hannibal. Imagine that, Roth, a small menacing cannibal. Sorry I know I'll never get tired of making cracks about his height (or his age *immature*) but I have no doubt he would have been a suitably terrifying Hannibal. At least if his character in Rob Roy is anything to go by. For those who havent seen Rob Roy. Roth's character in that film was pretty much a sociopath. A clip! for anyone curious of Archibald Cunningham, the villainous english count Roth played:

Finally to conclude this very pointless post. I will give you the reason this whole thing started. Two...three words "Lie to Me". Now as you all know, I checked the show on a whim cause roth was in it and I liked the premise. and a new love was born! So I will end with a Lie to Me picspam...or rather I WAS going to but then I got tired and swamped with school work again. So here's a link to a bunch to a post with lots of pretty caps instead: http://vanillabiscuit.livejournal.com/57961.html#cutid1

Everyone should check out Lie to Me. It's an awesome show, and you get to see Tim Roth point and yell at people "You're lying!" what more could you need to have an enriching television experiance?

I also like Roth. Though I sometimes think he should've tried to make more out of his career. But maybe it was his choice to do mostly smaller and diverse movies.
It's been a while since I've seen "R&G are Dead", I'd also say that they are, as the title says, dead. I think I've also seen "Captives" when it was on TV. Julia Ormond may have also played a role why I watched it. ;)

Looking through his long list of movies, I remember enjoying "Gridlock'd" quite a bit, even though it's also been a while since I saw that one.

sorry for the late reply!

yeah I have wondered why he chose to stick to small productions and indies for the most part but I remember him mentioning in an interview that he just liked it better, the environment was more relaxed in the independent films.

Captives was so trashy and silly but it was fun, a nice way to spend one's Saturday morning I'd say. she was very pretty, I'd never seen her in anything before this.

Man you are like the 3rd person to tell me how awesome that film was. I should really just buy it from amazon and stop being cheap, i was hesitant since I wasnt sure if I'd like it and wanted to watch it via less legit means first. but eh it's not that expensive. Plus it has the late and great tupac in it. oh quick question, does tim roth speak with an american accent in the film or an english one?

No problem!

I don't know if you have to go out and buy the DVD if haven't seen it. Though if you also like Tupac and if it's cheap, why not.

I'm afraid I'm not able to directly answer the question of Roth's accent in the movie. As usual, I had to watch it dubbed at the theatre here and on TV they also show old(er) movies only in German. But this clip will probably answer your question.

I absolutely adore Tim Roth. He's been one of my favourite ~contemporary~ actors for ages and ages.

And R&G is one of my favourite plays. I adore Stoppard.

he really is wonderful. He has this lovely energy and intensity he brings to all his roles. It's a shame he doesnt do alot of big name films. more people would know his greatness!

I wish I knew more about stoppard I know he's a great wit and genius playwright in theater circles and in the UK but until I saw this film and then googled him, I'd never heard of him :(

Haha. I would hate that because I hate when people I like become well recognised. :/

oh gosh, really? He's one of my favourite writers. I really recommend his play Arcadia.

Oh really? Yeah for me I'm always happy if the people I like can be successful. I was one of the people who was super happy when Simon Pegg got to be known in hollywood, since he's talented and it would have been a shame if he was confined to small time comedy sitcoms in the UK forever. Though Tim is doing fine for himself as is now. Especially with his gig on US tv atm.

Yeah we dont learn much about playwrights who arent arthur miller in US schools. unless you are in a theater program of some kind. I'll check it out! :)

Oh man right? He would have been 3 times as scary as hopkins IMO. Cause Tim has got one freaky stare. (its those big expressive eyes)

not really just his eyes, more like ......... (that's me pausing to think)..... a menacing expression that he always has.

i'm not a big fan of movies and i don't know him much but i know how he looks like and it scares me. lol

Happy belated Halloween to you, too :)

I adore Tim Roth as well (although, at the moment, I pretty much love almost anyone who has ever featured in a Tarantino film, but my love for Roth predates my current Tarantino phase). He's definitely up there with my favourite actors - and speaking of which, I should really catch up on Lie To Me.

thank you :D

Heh tell me about it I went on a little Tarantino spree recently saw reservoir dogs, jackie brown and then rewatched pulp fiction again all last week. Pulp never gets dull no matter how many times I see it. and I fell in love with Jackie Brown, she was so cool. I never wanted to cosplay a movie character before until I saw that film.

Roth is so great, and he really brings it on Lie to Me, I think he elevates that whole show with his acting cause I've told others before I think the show itself is nothing spectacular but Roth's presence just gives it that much more gravitas (to be fair kelli williams and mekhi phifer do a good job too)
