I saw UP in theaters yesterday evening. It was a beautiful beautiful film and just like every other pixar movie before it, it made me cry. But it also made me smile from the bottom of my crooked heart by the end too. Their track record in films is truly amazing, and their brand of story telling so rare in hollywood. Pixar is truly one of the last hold outs in the film industry for good, pure, sincere, honest film-making that can appeal to a wide range of audiences. It's nice to know in this chaotic and uncertain world, you can always count on a pixar movie to be good and heartwarming.

Seriously when I watch pixar films I often go to a place inside me that I dont get to see most of the time. As corny as that sounds, but I think there are few things in this world that bring me the kind of warmth and sense of peace that pixar films can. Of course not all of the films succeed on the same scale for me. So far I have to say ratatouille, Wall-e and Up have had the most profound effect on me, however toy story, the incredibles, and finding nemo are all also favorites and fuck dont even get me started on that SONG in toy story II "when she loved me" I dont think i ever bawled so hard in a ANIMATED film in all my life. Even their SHORT films are so incredibly well done. I'm always impressed with how much effort and thought seems to be put into all of their works. It reminds me of the golden age of toons, you know like the looney tunes. They werent just silly cartoons, the looney toons were often really witty and well done too. I wont go so far as to call them art, but what pixar does, that is definitely art.
I could seriously gush all day. I even know all about what films Pixar has lined up for the next 2 years. 2011 cant some soon enough, since they have a new original story coming out then that has a female protagonist, (a first for pixar I think, even though they've had some great female supporting characters over the years, and you can argue that incredibles is an ensemble piece so the whole family are the protagonists) and set in a fairy tale like land. For 2010 all they have lined up is Toy Story 3, which I dont feel that excited about sadly. It was not needed and in fact it was disney that urged pixar to make it, it was part of their agreement for rejoining studios, since for a while pixar split off from disney. and Disney said they would give them the money to do whatever they wanted and write how they like so long as they promised to do a couple of sequels for their popular films, so far it's Toy Story 3 and Cars II. I think Toy Story because of the nature of the setting, has potential to be good even if the sequel was largely unnecessary. Cars on the other hand....:( well I guess you cant hit a home run every time, so even if it doesnt turn out well, I wont begrudge Pixar for it.

I'd love to hear from my flist about which pixar films are your favorites, so I made a handy dandy little poll here.

[Poll #1408911]
