Absolutely. I started on season 2 yesterday and the difference in the casts is really like night and day. The amazing chemistry and camaraderie the first cast has is such a large part of it's appeal and the 2nd gen just doesnt have it. Like Cook said several times how much he loooves freddie but it never felt convincing to me at all. whereas when Tony tells Sid he wants him around and gets all emotional on Sid in S1 I totally believed it and was very moved. and it's scenes like that, that is moving powerful scenes that I think 3rd season totally lacks. I mean it tried to have moving scenes but they never quite hit the mark for me. (with the exception of JJ's episode, which moved me alot. perhaps cause I could relate with alot of his problems.) Also I felt like the first gen had REAL problems that had to do with their futures, their families and their mental or physical health, on top of relationship issues whereas in S3 it''s all about who is fucking who or is "in love" with who and it's very annoying. Thank you for highlighting my exact problems with the triangle and freddie btw. Freddie is passive-aggressive and that is something I CANT STAND and I kept wondering what it is about him that was driving me bonkers and now I get it. Cook is....I think I only ever liked Cook in this one scene he had with Naomi where he says she's clever and I think that was the loveliest he ever was and it lasted less than a minute. I feel like as a character he's interesting but very hard to like and not cause he's CRAZY but because of the cavalier way he fucks with people's lives and emotions (I did feel bad that he had such a shit dad though). I loved Effy in the first 2 seasons and worse than her having to choose between two tossers, her character was totally pushed to the side. She was just this object to be fought over and I never felt we really got to know her or understand her struggles at all and that upset me. Cause delving into the character of a troubled young woman would have been great, and she was so dark and charismatic in S1-2 what happened in S3? Really the worst part of the triangle is how I cant understand why Effy likes either boy or why they like her. We barely see them have any meaningful interactions or enjoyable experiences with each other. Unless you count all the times her and Cook fuck which I dont since she seemed out of it for most of them. Hardly a basis for love yeah? It's not even that it was that bad, it's that it could (and should) have been SO much better. and Like you said it went from being a really edgy real show about real young people. and instead turned into yet another teen drama with a pretty people fucking each other all the time. I wouldnt feel embarrassed about liking it though. Then again I watch Gossip Girl so maybe my sense of taste is a bit skewed. heh.
